Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima, has been the single most beautiful place I have seen to date. Sitting just off the coast to Hiroshima, the place is an absolute tourist attraction – granted – but once the sun lowers and the tourist boats leave the harbour, the little village on the island becomes a peace-haven. The only sound is a flute that is being played by a monk somewhere inside one of the temples there, while the old pagodas and shrines are illuminated by a dim light. If you visit Japan – go and stay the night!
