How to use Photoshop to Create a Dark Atmosphere – Example: The Dark Castle

Ireland is full of castles, some nicer than others. This one I found on a trip around the island – it was a horrid day; rain, wind, more rain, grey… But I had the chance to get a quick shot of this castle (handheld, I might add). The way the plants grew alongside the wall made me thinking that this could be a really nice dark atmosphere and surreal scene – at least with the help of photoshop.

Here is the final image:

And here the original:

The processing to get this atmosphere was fun, I had to:

  • adjust tons of colours and add some
  • replace the super washed out sky
  • adjust all sorts of lighting
  • transform the castle a little

This was a handheld image and I was kind of moving, the the plants on the site were not super sharp in the first place. Adding this sort of dreamy effect in photoshop made up for that.
